Crater to Coast in Tanzania

Don't leave anything off your bucket list when you visit East Africa. This 12-day trip helps you check everything off your list with extra flair in true Outside GO style.

Tanzania is one of our favorite countries to visit, and it's easy to see why. It's home to the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti—both spots renowned around the world as veritable must-see wonders where wildlife thrives. Then we take you to Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania, where you’ll spend four days playing in the aquamarine waters and trekking through the jungle. Along the way, you’ll be staying in cool Outside GO outposts, from the eco-dome chalets at The Highlands to safari-style tents at a camp called Ubuntu. You’ll be immersed in a rainforest, and a few days later soak in views as far as the eye can see. You’ll feel the hot African sun on the brim of your hat, followed by the cool tide around your ankles. You’ll taste authentic East African meals, then sample fresh ceviche. The only question is, what are you the most excited for?

Day 1

Arumeru River Lodge, tucked beneath the treetops just a short distance from the airport, is the perfect place to get acclimated before beginning your Tanzanian safari. This African-style lodge is crafted with the remnants of old sailing boats from Zanzibar. Take the afternoon to explore the rainforest, or stay right at the lodge to walk the gardens. You could even fit in a guided horseback ride if you're ready to get the trip started with a bang!

Days 2, 3

Located just 40 minutes away from the Ngorongoro Crater, The Highlands is nestled into a mountain forest hugging the Olmoti volcano. This newly-built camp blends an authentic African safari experience with contemporary touches, as you can see by their eight modern eco-dome style tents. There are plenty of activities to choose from to pass the time, including climbing to Olmoto crater on an ancient Maasai cattle trail, keeping an eye and ear open for birds, buffalo, zebra, leopard, hyena, and the occasional elephant. Of course, you'll also want to enjoy watching the sun rise over the horizon at Ngorongoro Crater before looking for the Big 5 within its staggering and diverse terrain.

Day 4, 5

Perhaps one of the most unique of all our African camps, Ubuntu Migration Camp was aptly named. The tented safari camp literally picks up and moves locations with the migrating herds of wildebeest in the vast Serengeti. From July to October, the camp is pitched in the northern Serengeti. Then from November to March, it is in the Kusini area of the southern Serengeti, and from May to mid-July, it is located in the Western Corridor. With seven spacious tents, Ubuntu uncovers the more fascinating and unexplored corners of the Serengeti in a way that no other camp can. Aside from exceptional wildlife viewing, you can also engage in cultural exchanges and one seriously epic balloon ride.

Day 6, 7, 8

Your next stop is also in the Serengeti, but this time at a permanent camp—Dunia. Located near Moru Kopjes and the game-rich Seronera region, this corner of the Serengeti is famous for excellent wildlife viewing. The great migration passes through twice a year, and big cats and rhino are plentiful. While staying at Dunia, you can expect to go on daily safari drives and learn bush skills with the guides. After listening to tales around a campfire beneath the stars, drift off to sleep in your tent to the sounds of crickets before waking up to do it all over again the next day.

Day 9, 10, 11, 12

The finale of your stay is on Zanzibar, an archipelago just off the coast of East Africa. You'll be kicking back at the vibrant yet laid-back Matemwe Lodge. Honestly there is no better place to spend a tropical vacation! Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow, coral-fringed lagoon on the quiet northeastern coast of Zanzibar Island, Matemwe Lodge’s blissful location and famously relaxed atmosphere make it the ideal place to unwind. During your four final days here you'll get to choose from a selection of water and land-based activities, like snorkeling the famous Mnemba Atoll, kite-surfing and kayaking the coastline, hiking through the Jozani forest, and visiting Matemwe Village. If you need a full day to just soak in the view, that's OK, too.

  • Enjoy an afternoon in the lush gardens and rainforest at Arumeru River Lodge before embarking to the plains

  • See the epic Ngorongoro Crater while staying at The Highlands, a cool new eco-dome style outpost

  • Move on to the mobile Ubuntu Camp, where you’ll get a chance to see the great wildebeest migration or even go for a hot air balloon ride

  • Next see the wildlife that surrounds the permanent Dunia Camp, such as the plentiful big cats and rhinos

  • Finally, stay at Matemwe Lodge on Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania for the ultimate tropical retreat where you'll kayak, snorkel, swim, hike, and more
