Bordering the Nairobi National Park, Emakoko is a family owned and run property. Just 45 minutes from both the international and domestic airports in Nairobi makes it the ideal base from which to start or end your safari. With only 10 beautifully appointed rooms, guests can relax and rejuvenate from their travels in privacy. If you are ready to begin exploring immediately morning and afternoon game drives can be arranged into the park which is home to black rhino, giraffe, zebra, and lion. There is a spacious lounge and dining area as well as a refreshing swimming pool.
Days 2, 3, 4
First on the itinerary is the Lewa House, at the very heart of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The buildings are set on top of a hill with extensive views over gentle rolling hills with Mount Kenya to the south and the rugged Mathews Range and the sacred mountain of Ol Olokwe to the north. The accommodations at Lewa House are in the form of cottage-style rooms which are spread out along the hillside, all looking to the expanse of wilderness to the north. Three of the original thatched family cottages still exist, each comprising of two en-suite rooms and a large shared veranda. The four recently added single-room cottages are built with sustainable ecological principles in mind while still being exceptionally comfortable and spacious, with wonderful views across the surrounding landscape. The houses are rustic, with traditional makuti (thatched swamp grass) roofs and a blend of traditional relaxed ambiance and modern comfort. Guests at Lewa House have almost exclusive access to an area teeming with exciting wildlife. Seventeen percent of the world's endangered Grevy's zebras, for instance, live here.
Days 5, 6, 7
Maasai Mara Game Reserve
MARA EXPEDITION CAMP
A perfect blend of comfort, adventure, and intimacy makes this destination a gem in the otherwise confounding matrix of camps in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Mara Toto Camp sits in a small bend in the Ntiakitiak River, where thick forest meets savannah, and just a few miles from its sister camp, Mara Plains. Built to embody a magical revisiting of the past, the camp draws from the designs of Africa’s original explorers and appeals particularly to those who enjoy East Africa’s romantic safari era.
Here, you will experience the best of both worlds: the intense action of the Masai Mara ecosystem, as well as the more private 70,000-acre Mara North Conservancy. Mara Toto is safari chic with five airy, spacious canvas tents, each with a bathroom where you can enjoy piping-hot water from huge brass "safari showers" while you sing along with a chorus of hippos lazing nearby. The camp is set down low, hidden from lights and noise and any sign of mankind. Under the grove of ebony trees its humble main area is lit by lanterns. This is a camp with a simple design but plenty of details to supply every last comfort.
Days 8, 9, 10, 11
Campi ya Kanzi - the name is Swahili for "Camp of the Hidden Treasure" - is a community-partnered safari camp in southeastern Kenya. Part of the Maasai Wilderness Trust, it is located on a private ranch and composed of luxury tented cottages and tented suites for traveling guests. Traveling with a larger group? The Kanzi House is a separate luxury camp, ideal for families and able to accommodate ten people. No matter where you stay at Campi ya Kanzi, you're sure to experience Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa, with breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro at every turn. Explore the surrounding terrain on a trail ride on horseback or hop in a safari vehicle with the top down. Spend time immersing yourself in Tsavo, Amboseli, and Chyulu National Parks, all places of abundant wildlife.
As Edward Norton, Campi ya Kanzi supporter and conservationist, knows well, what truly makes a one-of-a-kind trip to Kenya is participating in the culture of the local Maasai community. Visitors always come home reporting that the best moments were the ones shared with the local people, and we couldn't agree more. During your stay at Campi ya Kanzi you will be involved in more than just tourism. You'll be actively preserving the very same wilderness and wildlife that the Maasai are sharing with you, an experience that will stay with you long after you board your flight for home.
