Iceland is More than Just an Epic Winter Destination, and Here's Why

Get away from the tourists on this six-day adventure on Iceland's Northern Coast at the newly opened Deplar Farm.

Don't be fooled, Iceland is a must-see destination even after the aurora borealis fades away. When spring rolls around in this far-north destination, the changing of the seasons brings a whole new opportunity to discover this incredible Nordic island. Didn't know it was possible to have a five-star adventure in Iceland? Let us explain.

Just because Iceland has become synonymous with self-supported travel (think camper vans, zero showers, and gas station meals), doesn't mean that's the way it has to be. Our six-day summer stay at Deplar Farm, one of Iceland's best base camps, takes out not only all the smells of a camping trip but also all the logistics. You'll get to enjoy the remote wilderness with guides by foot, mountain bike, and horseback and come home each night to stunning digs complete with gourmet cuisine (and showers, by the way). Perfect for small families, couples, and friends alike looking to experience a piece of this storied destination, this trip is an excellent choice.

Days 1-2

Arrival and Drangey Island Adventure

After arriving in Iceland you'll be transported to Deplar Farm, your home for the next five nights. Sip on afternoon champagne and snack on canapés, get situated in the lodge, and then head out the front door on a guided evening hike. You'll be immediately treated to the views that are so iconic to Iceland—sweeping tundra painted in the colors of sunsets that seem to last forever. After the hike, take a swim in the luxurious pool, then tuck into a chef prepared dinner. The night isn't complete without after-dinner bonfire and drinks.

The next day, awake to a guided yoga session and breakfast spread. Then the adventure begins! You'll embark on a private boat to Drangey Island to go whale-watching. After spotting humpbacks, climb the island's cliffs, spy for puffins, and paddle around on sea kayaks. Dig in to lunch in the field before returning to Deplar Farm, where spa treatments and another delicious dinner await. That night sit back with your favorite book or enjoy a film with your friends and family in the media room.

Days 3-4

Ride Icelandic Horses, Kayak, Fly-fish, and More

The next day, arise early for a morning sauna session before tucking into breakfast. You'll need the fuel, as today consists of nearly every activity under the sun. Ride Icelandic horses (they're not ponies, contrary to popular misconception) along the northern coast, then take to the water and stand-up paddleboard, kayak, swim, fish, or some combination of the four on one of Iceland's numerous lakes. That afternoon you'll practice skeet shooting or archery (always a hit with the kids!) with the help of guides to perfect your shot.

On day four, the action continues in true Icelandic style. Take a helicopter tour to Myvatn*, a volcanic lake area surrounded by numerous natural hot springs. These geothermal sites are not only beautiful but are intensely healing and a must-see while in Iceland! You can also explore Lofthellir, a 3,500 year-old lava cave that is over 1,200 feet long. This evening will wind down in the style you've by now grown accustomed to with excellent food at the lodge and all the amenities you could possibly want.

*additional costs may apply

Days 5-6

Fly-fish and Mountain Bike With Unreal Views

The next day is a guided fly-fishing extravaganza. Cast for brown trout and Arctic char in the morning, return for lunch, then get back to it. Not a fan of fishing? Mountain biking is also an option for today. You'll have the chance to pedal along singletrack seldom used by anyone other than the local sheep. No matter which activity you choose, you'll be sure to soak in more of those iconic views that have people all over the world putting Iceland at the top of their bucket lists.

On day six, you'll enjoy the pool and sauna one final time before departing home with a clear mind, invigorated senses, and stories that will last a lifetime.
