ECUADOR: WONDERS OF THE ANDES, THE AMAZON AND THE GALAPAGOS
QUITO | THE AMAZON | THE GALAPAGOS | THE ANDES
A trip that would make Charles Darwin envious. Trekking through the lush Amazon rainforest, commingling with blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos Islands, and then kicking back at cloud height in the Andes.
This small country boasts the Galapagos Islands, the Andes, and even a substantial portion of the Amazon. Incredible when experienced one at a time, it easily becomes the trip of a lifetime when you combine all three. This 15-day adventure does just that.
You’ll spend several days in each region experiencing the wildlife and landscapes with top-notch guides and kicking back with local cuisine and ultra-luxe base camps each night. Without a doubt, this is the perfect slow-paced South American safari that will leave you feeling like you’ve left a part of your soul in Ecuador, and it with you.
CATCH SOME ZZZ'S BEFORE THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
Upon arrival in Quito you'll be met and transferred to your lodging for your first night in Ecuador. (Chances are your international flight arrives after your bed time.) The EB Hotel is brand new for 2018 and is perfectly located near the airport but just far enough away that no hum of passing planes will wake you. With locally sourced roses at every corner, beautiful accents throughout, and a delicious breakfast buffet included, you'll be ready to hit the ground running after a great night's sleep.
Days 2, 3, 4
Kick things off with a stay at either La Selva Amazon Ecolodge or Mashpi Lodge. Both excellent options that offer jungle-esque wildlife opportunities, we'll work with you to pick the best choice for you and your traveling companions.
La Selva is an incredible thatched-roof base camp right on the glassy waters of Lake Garzacocha, La Selva Amazon Ecolodge. You'll feel as if you've settled right into the environment as birds flit by your open-air windows and monkeys of all shapes and sizes clammer through the treetops above. By day, go on excursions with a guide to spot parrots, boa constrictors, and other local wildlife that call this part of the Amazon home. At night you'll unwind with a fresh-cooked meal and cocktails followed by time spent in your luxurious private hot tub on the deck of your bamboo-crafted cabana. Fall asleep to the surround-sound of the rainforest before waking up to do it all over again.
Mashpi Lodge is a privately owned nature reserve where you get to become one with the elements. Squish your way through a labyrinth of jungle trails (rainboots and ponchos are provided), soar above the treetops in the famous Dragonfly gondola, dip your toes into any number of picturesque waterfalls, or for the most adventurous, take a ride in the sky bike, an elevated tandem bike that takes you and a friend 650 feet above the forest floor. After the day’s adventures, tuck into a delectable three-course meal before relaxing into your plush accommodations. Wake up the next morning to a floor-to-ceiling view of the cloud forest before doing it all over again.
GET TO KNOW THE HEART OF ECUADOR IN QUITO
CASA GANGOTENA HOTEL
It's back to Quito on day five. Take the afternoon to get acclimated (literally, the city is above 9,000 feet in elevation) and enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of this South American cultural hub. You'll be staying at the historic Casa Gangotena, a mansion that has been restored into an elegant boutique hotel. You'll be situated within a stone's throw from the gilt Jesuit church of La Compañía de Jesús, the Museum of the City, Plaza Santo Domingo, the Presidential Palace, and bustle of Quito’s Old Town—perfect for low-key walkabouts at your own pace before departing to your next destination. We highly recommend dinner at Zazu, where seven courses of delicious fare are paired with local wines and beers for a truly delectable event.
Days 6, 7, 8, 9
The Galapagos archipelago is one of the last places on the planet to be relatively untouched by man. Only three percent of the landmass is inhabited by humans, and the islands support a number of remarkable ecosystems, including one of the planet's most important marine reserves. The Enchanted Islands, as they are known, lie at the crossroads of science, nature, exploration, and literature. You'll spend four days at the Galapagos Safari Camp, the perfect place to experience this otherworldly destination. The eco-luxury tented camp is one of the first of its kind in Latin America, and it follows the African safari tradition in which guests enjoy total comfort under canvas while experiencing nature in its purest form. You'll spend your time taking yacht trips to uninhabited islands, learning from the local fisherman, and surfing Tortuga Bay.
The ultimate way to end your Ecuadorean adventure, Hacienda Zuleta is set amidst the giddy heights of the Andes at 9,600 feet. The Hacienda and working farm has been in the family of the late Galo Plaza Lasso, a former president of Ecuador, for more than 100 years. Only two hours north of Quito, Hacienda Zuleta sits flanked by smoking volcanoes and rich fertile farmland; it is also the only spot on earth where a temperature of zero degrees Celsius coincides with latitude zero.
An equestrian lover's paradise, Hacienda Zuleta is renowned for their stable of horses fondly known as Zuletenos. Their stables offer a range of trusty steeds for every level of rider. Miles of meandering roads through lush pastureland, pine trees, and a eucalyptus forest make the valley of Zuleta a paradise for outdoor activities. Spend the first three days hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, and trekking around this incredible property.
