You'll begin your trip at the award-winning Explora Atacama, located on the northern reaches of this amazing desertscape. Explora properties, established to give travelers a comfortable base in some of South America's most remote settings, emphasize in-depth adventures that offer an understanding and a connection to these natural destinations. Choose from more than 40 activities that take in this area's highlights and amazing geologic features, including horseback riding across the sand dunes and red plains; hiking amid giant cacti, to Moon Valley, or to local hot springs; or mountain biking across the Salt Ridge, learning about petroglyphs and crystallized salt creeks. Upon your return, relax sore muscles at the spa, stargaze at the property's private observatory, or enjoy a sampling of Chilean wines and cuisine.

Days 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

TORRES DEL PAINE NATIONAL PARK

EXPLORA PATAGONIA

For many, the granite spires and still-wild scenery of this heralded national park are the highlight of a Chilean adventure. Drop your bags at Explora Patagonia, located on the shores of Lake Pehoé within the park, pause for a moment to admire the majestic views from your bedroom window, and then head out with a guide to immerse yourself in an active pursuit: trail rides through the Pampas, past grazing guanaco and a lagoon home to numerous birds; trekking on the well-known W trail circuit, which takes in the landmark “horns”; or perhaps an overland van day adventure to a calving glacier, steppes home to flamingos, or to visit local gauchos at work. The options are limitless. If you just can’t get enough of the outdoors, enjoy it come evening from an open-air Jacuzzi. Or take a tour of the stables and visit the horses, warm yourself at the bar with traditional maté tea, or loosen up with a massage. You'll be able to take advantage of all this and more during your stay here, which ends with a transfer to the coastal city of Punta Arenas. If you’re not bent on heading directly home, consider a cruise from here to the Antarctic, available from November to March. Talk to us about details.
