Tanzania's All Time Classic Safari

This 9-day trip takes you through the most iconic areas in Tanzania, from the Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti with a private GO-rated guide and classic tented camps along the way.

Great for families, couples, and solo travelers alike, this is one of our most popular ways to experience safari in East Africa. A tried and tested itinerary enjoyed by several of our trip designers, we’ve curated the best of Tanzania so you can knock your first–or second, or third–safari out of the park with incredible wildlife sightings, wonderful hosts and guides that make you feel right at home, and special cultural experiences that will make your adventure one to remember for a lifetime.

You’ll start things off in Arusha at the base of Mount Meru before journeying to Tarangire National Park, an area with nearly the same concentration of game as the Serengeti with a fraction of the visitors. Then, head to the Ngorongoro Highlands where you’ll stay on what feels like the edge of the world and enjoy daily game drives and walks in the highlands wilderness. The grand finale takes place at Serengeti Safari Camp, an absolute must for any visitor to Tanzania and especially those who want to see as many animals as possible. The best part? You’ll be side by side with a private guide for the entire experience, making this one of our most special trips we offer in Africa, hands down.

Travelers embarking from January through March 2019 will have the opportunity to take a guided bush walk from Entamanu Ngorongoro to Serengeti Safari Camp, taking advantage of their close proximity in this time frame. Ask us about this special adventure and how we can make it the perfect hike for your group.

Day 1

Get Settled in Arusha

The Rivertrees Country Inn provides the perfect launch point to start your adventure. Nested in the foothills of Mount Meru with a majestic view of the great Kilimanjaro, you’ll have the chance to get freshened up with a short overnight before your real adventure safari begins. Enjoy taking a stroll through the charming estate property, which was once a coffee farm, and tuck into tasty meals prepared with garden-fresh ingredients and old family recipes. You’ll wake up the following morning well rested and prepared for the journey to come.

Days 2-4

Go on Safari in Tarangire National Park

The next day, you’re off to Tarangire National Park, where you’ll be staying at Kuro Tarangire. This small boutique camp is located in Tarangire National Park in Tanzania’s Manyara Region—a park second only to the Serengeti in its concentration of wildlife. Surrounded by a canopy of acacia and kigelia trees on the banks of the Tarangire River, this is an exceptionally quiet area of the park that Kuro calls its own. While the riverbed is dry for part of the year, there is a rhythmic movement of wildlife in the area as animals move from the park to the hills in the west to the swamps in the east.

Each morning at Kuro, you’ll rise at early dawn and walk with a guide along the riverbed to discover what occurred overnight amongst your resident animal life. Look for the footprints of elephants and smaller critters, and listen to the birds come awake with the sun. Later in the day, climb into a 4x4 vehicle to head farther out into the park to find giant herds of buffalo, prides of lions, and other classic African animals. Don’t forget to enjoy the flora too! Baobabs grow here and are worth a photo (or 500). At night, relax around a campfire regaled by tales from your guides and staff and tuck in to scrumptious fare before doing it all again the next day.

Days 5, 6

Embark on a Journey in the Ngorongoro Highlands

Your next destination is another one of Tanzania’s seven natural wonders—Ngorongoro Crater. Miles away from any other camp, you'll drive to Entamanu Ngorongoro camp on a private road the follows the contours of the rim with breathtaking views on either side. This privileged high-altitude location means that you're able to watch the sun rise over the world's largest unbroken caldera and have it set at your back over the Serengeti Plains. There truly isn't anywhere else you can see both things in the same day, mere feet away from your safari tent!

By day, you'll delve into the world of the famous caldera where wildlife run amok in great numbers. You'll also get to explore Empakai, Olmoto, and Ol Donyo Lengai, areas often ignored by tourists who stick only to the crater. You’ll have two nights here, each of them returning to your canvas tent on stilts to cuddle up beneath a wool and down duvet and the blanket of a billion stars.

Days 7-9

Top It All Off in the Famous Serengeti

How do you keep up with a million migrating wildebeest? You move with them. That’s how Serengeti Safari Camp stays ahead of the game. This is your grand finale in Tanzania. With private game drives tailored to your interests (for example this is one of the only places you can go out on safari all day if your heart so desires), this is wildlife safari at its finest. No matter what kind of drive you embark on, you’ll be accompanied by great guides during your stay who know just where to spot the animals. While the wildebeest will be the stars of the show, you’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled for lions, leopards, and other characters like local warthogs that bring your time on the plains to life.

With only six open-plan walk-in tents with en-suite bathrooms, these tents are low impact on the environment while still featuring all the creature comforts you’ve come to expect from a GO camp. Traveling with kids in tow? Don’t worry, there’s a family tent with two bedrooms and sitting area special for you. Serengeti Safari Camp is a great way to top off the safari of a lifetime in East Africa.
