Serra Cafema

Serra Cafema in Namibia

The desert oasis where wildlife, adventure, and culture merge into one fantastic retreat

Serra Cafema is the perfect way to complement a stay in Namibia's rugged outback. Undoubtedly one of the most remote camps in southern Africa, Serra Cafema is located in an extreme north-west corner of Namibia on the banks of the Kunene River in the Hartmann Valley. This thatch-roofed retreat is an intimate, peaceful camp inspired by the area’s Himba people. With a unique mix of rustic and luxury elements nestled amongst shady albida trees, we're sure this will come to be one of your favorite GO outposts, too.

Get Your Bearings

Serra Cafema consists of eight riverside wood, canvas, and thatched villas on spacious, elevated decks that blend smoothly into the picturesque surroundings. Each tent has everything you need and more to feel like home. If you're celebrating something special, one of the tents goes above and beyond with exceptional views. Bringing the kids along? Another tent is prepared to accommodate the whole family. The Ozonganda, or main area, comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, a sunken lounge, library, curio shop, and swimming pool—all sharing views of the beautiful Kunene River below.

Endless Sand Dune Fun

Just because Serra Cafema is surrounded by Namibia's token desert, doesn't mean there isn't anything to do. Your days will be filled with quad-bike adventures, trips down the Kunene River, and nature drives in Hartmann Valley learning about this delicate terrain and searching for the reclusive desert chameleon. Photographers will find endless lunar-esque landscapes to capture in changing light, adrenaline junkies will delight in charging across the natural playground, and those looking for a peaceful escape will find themselves the only ones for miles beyond miles.

Rare, Wonderful Wildlife

The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water in this region. It creates an oasis along its banks—a winding band of green surrounded by the lunar-like landscape of the Namib Desert which stretches to the Serra Cafema mountain range in the north. Game viewing here is richer than you might think, and includes small herds of gemsbok, springbok and Hartmann's mountain zebra. The Kunene River has a large population of Nile crocodiles. Bird-watchers will enjoy spying for Burchell's courser and Benguela long-billed lark, two of the characteristic bird species to be found around Serra Cafema. There are also a number of endemic reptiles, the desert plated lizard being a particular speciality.

Cultural Experience for the Ages

During your stay at Serra Cafema you'll have a chance to visit with the local Himba Community. In this isolated area, the Himba people continue their traditional semi-nomadic way of life. When they are in the area, you are welcome to learn about their lifestyle and customs—truly a stark contrast to our Westernized way of life. As with all of our Outside GO trips, this is often a guest favorite and we are sure it will be one of yours!
