Happy Holidays 2017
Happy Holidays from Outside GO
Wishing you a peaceful and serene holiday season and New Year from our family to yours.
Letter by Sandy Cunningham
I was not always a trip designer. Once upon a time I lived in a wild and far-flung place, Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa.
We lived on some 250,000 acres of pristine wilderness in south eastern Kenya amongst the Masai of Imbirikani and thousands of animals, including some straggly black maned lions who roamed the camp at night. As the holidays grew near the quest to find the perfect tree entailed picking out an acacia drepanolobium, a stout thorny tree whose pods housed thousands of ants. The tree had to have green leaves on it which was always a challenge if the rains had come late. We went in protecting ourselves with gloves and once we cut the tree of choice, we let it sit so the angry little ants could head out and find a new place to inhabit. Once safely ant-free, I would spray paint the little nubby pods in silver, gold and bronze and presto—we had our African Christmas tree!
As the holidays approached, the camp filled up with guests, laughter, and Christmas music, and the kitchen became a fervor of activity. Yet even within all this bustle and excitement there was a peaceful calm everywhere around us. It only took an early morning walk or an evening stroll at dusk to be surrounded by the vast silence in this breathtaking landscape to feel wholly at peace.
"As the holidays grew near the quest to find the perfect tree entailed picking out an acacia drepanolobium, a stout thorny tree whose pods housed thousands of ants."
These days at home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I crave that solitude and serenity as the school semester winds down with a flurry of exams, fundraisers, and cocktail parties that crowd an already busy life. A feeling of being overwhelmed always seems to envelop me at this time of year, and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. It is right about now that I look farther afield to regain a sense of peace, whether it’s starting to plan our summer travels for next year, or taking time to just sit down and write long overdue cards to friends and family across the globe.
It’s also a perfect time to reflect on the relationships we’ve cherished this year and the ones still to come. We seek those people, experiences, and loved ones who nurture our souls, fuel our humor, and embrace compassion. I count myself lucky here in the green hills of New Mexico, surrounded by an incredible team of smart, funny, and inspiring people with whom I work alongside and a community filled with energy and compassion.

This year was full of adventure for our whole team at Outside GO. In the spring, Chip and I took our two daughters to South Africa, where I was able to show them where I grew up and they put their own spin on things–including bungee jumping off of Victoria Falls Bridge (see the photos here). Then this fall our trip designers Laura and Brittany explored Kenya and Tanzania (read Laura’s report from Zanzibar here), and our marketing manager Whitney got a taste of Australia (her story, here). We’ve combined these experiences with feedback from our travelers like you to create our Top 10 Trips of 2018 guide, available for download to keep you inspired all year long.
While our family quest for skiable snow may take us farther north than we planned this year, it will give us time to reconnect as a family, howl along to Christmas tunes, and play “remember when.”
To our dear friends and intrepid adventurers, we wish you all calm, peace, and serenity this holiday season. May your time with your loved ones be one you cherish into the New Year.
From our family to yours!
