10 Trips You Need to Book in Advance

Plan Ahead: 10 Trips You Need to Book in Advance

With small properties come the best guides, wildlife experiences, and guaranteed tranquility. But you need to book in advance to get your spot.

Here at Outside GO, we specialize in unearthing some of the coolest outposts from around the world. There’s only one catch—you need to book up to two years in advance to experience these epic destinations, especially during peak seasons like the holidays or if you're traveling with a large group of friends or family. Below are some of our most popular trips along with tips for how you can plan ahead to get there.

Remember that as always, nearly all of our trips are completely customizable to your wildest dreams.

ANTARCTICA: short season with high demand

START PLANNING: 1-2 years in advance

One of our only set departure trips simply because of the nature of travel to Antarctica, this is also one that takes the most lead time. While you might be able to find more spontaneous bookings on larger ships, our favorite boats make it feel more like you’re traveling with your extended family. You’ll want to start planning one to two years in advance, especially if you’re traveling with a larger group and plan to combine destinations to places like the Atacama Desert or Patagonia like in the featured trip below.

SOUTH AFRICA: safari destination with city highlights

START PLANNING: 18 months-2 years in advance

South Africa is one of our most popular destinations. As such, it can be hard to get the perfect dates for your schedule if you are booking at the last minute. We recommend looking ahead anywhere from 18 months to two full years in advance for properties in South Africa as well as  other popular safari destinations like Kenya. Here is one of our favorite trips of all time, an 11-day safari built particularly for families with fun for all ages.

AUSTRALIA AND TASMANIA: guided hikes and boutique properties

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

Australia is a huge country (it’s a continent, after all), so there is definitely an opportunity to book a little closer to your departure date depending on what you have in mind. But if you’re hoping to partake in one of our set departure trips that includes a multi-day hike (like this one) or one that features some of the most exceptional properties Down Under, then you’ll need to plan ahead. We think a year should do the trick.

ICELAND: remote location with limited spots

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

In case you haven’t heard, Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for North Americans right now. And that means you need to look ahead to build the perfect trip. Our go-to property is called Deplar Farm, and even though it’s a considerable distance away from the normal tourist areas to the south of Iceland, it doesn’t have many rooms. Get your spot locked in at this gorgeous property about a year in advance to be safe, and in the meantime, check out this inspiration itinerary to see just what you can do while you’re there.

CROATIA: popular destination for worldwide travelers

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

One of our only highlighted destinations in Europe, Croatia is an upscale paradise that goes great with a dose of GO-style adventure. But it’s proximity to the rest of Europe means that it can book up fast! We recommend finalizing your accommodations a year in advance for the summer season to make sure you get the perfect trip with perfect weather to go along with it. Need more convincing? Check out our most popular inspiration itinerary for this Mediterranean destination.

NEW ZEALAND: adventure hot spot on the other side of the earth

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

Another popular destination for GO travelers, New Zealand books fast. You’ll want to start looking at options at least a year in advance to guarantee there’s still room—especially when it comes to this 16-day adventure. We take you to some of our favorite outposts on both islands for the ultimate tour of everything from adrenaline-filled activities to sipping local wines with breathtaking views. Check out more images from the trip at the link below.

CHILE INCLUDING PATAGONIA: #1 bucket list item for adventurers

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

One of our top trips, our Iconic Extremes adventure in Chile is also one of the most difficult to book. That’s because the properties highlighted during this 9-day adventure–Awasi Atacama and Patagonia–are famous for their gorgeous architecture, surroundings, and the fact that they just don’t have many rooms. Lock in your keys to South American paradise at least a year in advance so that the only thing you’ll have to worry about is whether or not your guide can help you track down a puma once you’re in Patagonia.

BRITISH COLUMBIA: remote locale with limited ocean-side cabins

START PLANNING: 18 months-2 years in advance

Perhaps the most surprising on our list, British Columbia, is one of the hardest to book at the last minute. That’s because the outposts we adore north of the border, namely Nimmo Bay and Tweedsmuir Park Lodge, are so beloved and have such short summer seasons that they go quickly! Start chatting with us about your great Canadian safari a year and a half to two years ahead of time so we can get you in. If you need more inspiration, just look at the itinerary below.

RWANDA AND UGANDA: up-and-coming travel destination

START PLANNING: 1 year-18 months in advance

Trekking for endangered gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda is, for obvious reasons, extremely popular among our travelers. Not only are the boutique properties we feature hard to book into, but you also need to coordinate your time with the gorillas well in advance. In addition, this is an adventure that’s only going to get more popular as time goes on. We would love to help you start planning a year to a year and a half ahead of time so that you can enjoy this life-changing experience for yourself.

ECUADOR: galapagos islands and jungles sans tourists

START PLANNING: 1 year in advance

Relatively close to those of us in North America, Ecuador is a haven for the adventure- and wildlife-loving family. We recently featured three stunning and exclusive properties in this 15-day trip that definitely fill up in advance. If you can start planning your family vacation well ahead of time–at least a year–it will guarantee we can work with you to get the right dates for your group, no matter how many are going to be exploring the Galapagos Islands and Amazon for their first time.
