Chem Chem Conservancy
Chem Chem Conservancy is home to one of our favorite outposts in Tanzania that is doing the lion's share of the volunteer work in their area.
Created by Fabia Bausch, a courageous former investment banker, and her husband and French nature enthusiast Nicolas Negre, Chem Chem was born out of a deep passion for wildlife, respect for the breathtaking Tanzania Sunsets, and a dire need for responsible eco-tourism. With elephant populations decreasing over 60 percent in the past five years and illegal ivory trade threatening the species, Chem Chem works hard to rehabilitate these tusked beauties’ migration routes in addition to other projects. Stay with Chem Chem in their beautiful lodges, intricately crafted to connect all visitor with the natural beauty of the land, while a portion of your payment goes to their conservation funds.
Chem Chem is involved in many different education projects, including supporting facilities where school takes place, providing housing to teachers, and sourcing working materials for the classroom such as books, pens, and more. Chem Chem also interacts with field guides and the kids in the school to awaken an awareness of nature and get them excited about participating in conservation efforts.
In addition to the educational projects, Chem Chem also spends a staggering amount of time working to protect the animals that call this part of Africa home. They are rehabilitating an elephant migration route, working on the Living Walls projects (which protects livestock from predatory cats like lions so the community can live in harmony with wildlife), fund and support an anti-poaching unit, and also participate in wildlife management areas education projects
Lastly, Chem Chem helps support the community in a recreational way as well. In addition to a women's club, they founded Kick4Wildlife, a local soccer league, in the surrounding villages. Each of the 8 villages involved in the conservancy area has one team represented at the cup. Each team is equipped with T-shirts, shorts and soccer balls. They also receive a number of supporter T-shirts. Chem Chem will also building a soccer field in the main village, where the games will be held.
