5 DAYS HIKING AUSTRALIA'S REMOTE LORD HOWE ISLAND

LORD HOWE ISLAND, AUSTRALIA

This five-day walking journey on Australia's Lord Howe Island combines epic hiking trails with breathtaking views, ocean playgrounds, and five-star cuisine.

During this "Seven Peaks Walk," every day you'll embark on unique paths that take you across white-sand beaches, rolling hillsides, and up steep and rocky volcanic terrain. For those who want quad-burning workouts, multiple challenging summits are within your reach. For those looking for a less extreme walking vacation, lush valleys are begging to be explored. You'll do it all with experienced guides who know this island like the back of their hands and have no problem meeting the desires of your group.

You'll be staying at Pinetrees Lodge on Lord Howe Island, which is technically located in New South Wales but quite a considerable distance from mainland Australia (only a two hour flight from Sydney). This remote paradise might only be a tiny speck in the Tasman Sea (it's smaller than six square miles), but it gives places like Fiji and Tahiti a run for their money! Between all the miles you'll hike, snorkel, and swim, you'll savor every inch of it.

Day 1

ARRIVAL FOLLOWED BY A BOAT RIDE AND HIKE

PINETREES LODGE

On the first day of your Australian hiking adventure, things start off with a bang. In the morning, embark on a glass-bottomed boat cruise to North Bay, then scramble up North Head or Mount Eliza—or if you're feeling exceptionally chipper, both! You can also replace the hike with a trip to the Herring Pools from the nearby Gulch. Walk over Dawson Point to Old Settlement Beach and back to Pinetrees along the shore to complete the perfect first day full of action-packed adventure.

Day 2

CLIMB KIM'S LOOKOUT AND SWIM AT NED'S BEACH

PINETREES LODGE

The next day, awake feeling refreshed after a sumptuous night's sleep in your suite. Dive into a breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and a sprinkle of semi-dried Persian fruits. Fresh-cooked options are tempting, too! Enjoy free range eggs benedict with smoked ham and hollandaise on brioche; button mushroom, spinach and hazelnut salad with scrambled eggs and hazelnut vinaigrette; or smoked bacon, cheddar and spinach quesadilla with avocado and coriander salsa.

Afterwards you'll climb to Kim's Lookout and traverse the ridge between Kim's and Malabar, two iconic peaks of Lord Howe Island. Descend the south ridge of Malabar to Ned's Beach, and cool off with a refreshing swim. From there you'll walk to Middle Beach and climb Transit Hill before returning to Pinetrees ready for another fabulous meal.

Days 3, 4

EAST COAST EXPLORING AND A DAY ON THE WATER

PINETREES LODGE

On day number three you'll rise early to explore the east coast of the island. Walk to Mutton Bird Point and Rocky Run, then climb to Goathouse on Mount Lidgbird. This part is optional and adds a bit of adventure. The trail is steep, requires the use of ropes, and provides the most rewarding views of the whole island. From there descend to Smoking Tree Ridge and climb Intermediate Hill to a new observation platform located there. Return to the lodge via Blinky Beach for much deserved sunset canapés and cocktails followed by a fresh seafood smorgasbord.

The next day is all about resting and recovering. Take a snorkel trip on the outer reef or an offshore snorkel adventure to Admiralty Islands followed by a kayak trip on the lagoon. Everything today is optional and up to your every whim. If you prefer to sit in the sun and indulge in afternoon tea and pastries, then by all means, enjoy!

Days 5, 6

SUMMIT MOUNT GOWER OR HIKE ERSKINE VALLEY

PINETREES LODGE

On the fifth day you have the option of taking an advanced hike to climb Mount Gower (which reaches over 2,800 feet from sea level). Stunning views await those who tackle the peak, as well as a chance to experience the unique mist forest and bird rookery at the summit of this extinct volcano. Not up for the altitude? Hike Erskine Valley via the Lower Road, one of the most spectacular walking trails in all of Australia.

The next day you'll enjoy one last delicious Pinetrees breakfast before departing home or, even better, on to explore another part of Australia with Outside GO.
