BEGINNING THE JOURNEY IN HO CHI MINH
Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant, chaotic, invigorating welcome to Southeast Asia. The streets are full of scooters, cars, and busses rushing past on their way to something exciting. They zoom past French colonial architecture, striking modern edifices, and serene, antiquated gardens. Stark contrasts between old and new are the hallmark of Asian cities and Ho Chi Minh is no exception. Your river cruise journey will take you into areas seemingly untouched by time, and we could think of no better place to begin that journey than in a city leaping towards the future.
A short transfer out of the hub of the city brings you to the My Tho dock. Waiting in the waters of the Mekong is a floating 5-star luxury hotel, the Aqua Mekong, your home for the coming week. The stunning river cruise ship is your window into another world, one of rich, ancient, and deeply contrasting cultures, all against a dramatic backdrop of ever-shifting natural beauty.
Days 2, 3
INTO THE DELTA
With the prow of the ship pointed upriver, you begin your adventure into Vietnam's Mekong Delta. This southern region of the country is a lush water world, boasting a raw beauty as you pass by verdant plantations and riverside villages. The beauty of a river cruise is the ability to leave the ship and experience the wonders around you. Begin the day exploring the local market at Sa Dec, or maybe a stop at a nearby mat weaving village, Binh Thanh intrigues you. A taste of local life is in order when you stop in a home for a fruit buffet and a folk song performance. Floating markets, Buddhist Pagodas, rickshaw rides, island cycling trips, and Mekong inspired cooking lessons are all available to you as you delve deeper into the heart of this life-giving river.
Days 4, 5
As you bid farewell to Vietnam you begin to make your way through the Cambodian countryside en route to the capital. The Khmer way of life is seen easily from the river as you watch artisans dyeing and weaving krama, a sturdy garment you'll find is an almost omnipresent adornment for the Khmer people. An afternoon excursion by skiff brings you to Preah Prosop, a secluded village of stilted thatch houses still absorbed in the traditional ways of life.
You'll notice the energy of the river begin to shift as the temples and peaks of Phnom Penh's cityscape come into view. A motorized tuk tuk is your key to the city as you visit the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and the National Museum of Cambodia. A heart wrenching piece of Cambodia's past is on display for those who wish to also take a visit to the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide. An evening Aspara dance performance brings to life the beauty and traditions of the ancient Khemr people.
Days 6, 7
Phnom Penh sits at the crossing of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. As you leave the city behind you'll head down the Tonle Sap, into a region famous for its floating villages. The people here live according to the river. You'll soon find yourself in a world where homes, schools, bars, and even police stations perch on stilts above the water. In the sleek Aqua Mekong you'll venture into this exciting world. Watch skilled craftsmen bent over their work in Kampong Chhang, the 'Port of Pottery', and in Koh Chen, a silversmith village lauded for their silver bowls - a piece the Cambodian king often gifts to visiting dignitaries! Seeing this traditional way of life isn't something which is open to all, and you'll long remember the cultural insights and intimate moments you experience during your time on this part of the river.
SIEM REAP + DISEMBARKATION
The mysterious and much-loved Siem Reap is your final destination on this enchanting journey through Vietnam and Cambodia. Before you leave the river behind, a special excursion has been arranged as a final farewell. The river is home to more than humans of course, and aboard a skiff you'll set off into the 22,000 hectare Prek Toal Core Bird Reserve, a freshwater refuge for large waterbirds, and a mesmerizing up-close look at the ecosystem of the river. Upon your disembarkation you'll find yourself in the city known as the 'Gateway to Angkor'. Home to the legendary Angkor Wat temple complex, you'll want to spend more than a couple days here to soak up the powerful aura of this ancient site. Watching the sun rise over the timeworn peaks of the temples is an ending of absolute perfection, and one we're excited to help you create.
