3 PICTURE-PERFECT DAYS HIKING AUSTRALIA'S ARKABA WILDERNESS
This short but sweet four-day hiking adventure in Australia's Arkaba Wilderness area is an excellent addition to any adventure Down Under.
You'll trek through 60,000 acres of remote conservation area spying for kangaroos and emus as you hike with a small group and an experienced guide. All your personal items are carried by car between the three different base camps (two luxury wilderness camps, one classic restored 1850's Australian homestead) so that all you have to worry about is enjoying the scenery and tucking into delicious lunch-time breaks. The backdrop of the Flinders Ranges will take your breath away as you cozy into your open-air sleeping platform after indulging in a three-course meal with locally sourced Australian wine to wash it all down. Needless to say, this is far from the backpacking trips you remember from back home.
Please note that this is one of our set departure trips, so we'll need to coordinate dates with you. Group sizes never exceed 10. Exact walking routes are flexible to the ability of the group and are weather dependent. Get in touch below to start planning your epic trip to Australia!
ADELAIDE TO ARKABA
BLACK'S GAP CAMP
Upon arrival in Port Augusta, you'll head to the Arkaba Homestead where breakfast and a casual briefing awaits. Although you'll be leaving shortly to embark on your walking bush safari, remember that in two night's time you'll be back to enjoy all the amenities of Arkaba Homestead.
After breakfast depart by vehicle to your starting point at Wilpena Pound Resort and set off on foot. You'll start the trip off with a bang, covering 7.5 miles from the resort to Wilpena Pound, entering the Arkaba Wilderness, and finally descending to the lip of the Pound to Black's Gap Camp where you'll spend the night. Wash away the day's dust with a hot bush shower and a cup of tea (or something a little stronger) while enjoying a spectacular sunset in the Australian outback. You'll then be treated to a three-course camp dinner eaten al fresco and paired with a fine wine before tucking into your sleeping bag for a night beneath the stars.
HEYSEN TRAIL TO THE ELDER RANGE
The second day of your walking safari covers even more ground—a whopping 8.5 miles. (Keep in mind the distance and exact walking route can vary depending on the needs of the group). This should be the most scenic day of the hike, as you'll go from Black's Gap to the rolling hills and vistas of historic sheep farming lands. Follow the famous Heysen Trail, taking in the pastoral and agricultural history of the area, and keeping an eye out for different kinds of kangaroos and emus. The last leg of the day takes you west into the hills and to the base of the Elder Range, where cypress trees abound. Your camp for the night is Elder Camp, and will have the same great fixings as the night before—a hot shower and delicious, well-deserved fare.
ELDER CAMP TO ARKABA HERITAGE HOMESTEAD
The next day, you'll wake up to a glorious sunrise on the Elder Range that towers over you. Take it easy this morning and maximize photo ops, bird watching, and an unhurried cup of coffee. You'll be moving southeast today, about another 7-8 miles, through more hill country then traversing into mallee and native pine forests as you approach Slaty Creek. From here, climb up the ridge to get views of the Red Range before descending to Arkaba Creek. Enjoy the shade of the magnificent river red gums along the riverbank, and stop for a relaxing lunch spot before arriving at Arkaba homestead in the early afternoon.
With only five rooms, Arkaba is a home-away-from-home. It's also the perfect place to completely unplug from anything other than the present moment, as they literally don't even have WiFi. In true wild bush style, the homestead is both down to earth but luxurious at the same time. Needless to say it will be a great spot to unwind after hiking for three days in the wild Australian outback.
WINE TASTING AND SIGHT SEEING BACK TO ADELAIDE
The final morning of your trip you'll depart Arkaba Homestead for a journey through Clare Valley wine region and the Adelaide Hills. Drive through the historic outback towns of Quorn, Wilmington, Mount Remarkable, and Melrose—all famous for their nature-filled valleys and riverbeds. Don't worry, there's plenty of time to stop for a delicious lunch and a wine tasting or two!
This marks the end of your Arkaba Walk, but if you'd like to extend your stay in Adelaide or in another part of Australia our team would be more than happy to work with you on a customized itinerary to fit all your whims and wishes.
