Taos Wilderness Lodge

New Mexico's family-friendly mountain home combines local charm with rustic luxury at the foot of a world-class ski resort

The Wilderness Lodge at Kachina Peak is the highest private residence and accommodation in the state of New Mexico. It also happens to be right at the top of one of the best ski schools in the entire country; Taos Ski Valley. It's no surprise then, that with the combination of family-friendly slopes and advanced terrain for experts alike, the Wilderness Lodge is an Outside GO favorite for families of all ages.

Otherworldly Accents, Western Inspired

Inspired by the look and feel of the old mining cabins which once dotted this wild landscape, the exteriors and interiors of Wilderness Lodge are defined by high pitched roofs and shaft-like clerestories clad in a contemporary blend of rusted tin, reclaimed wood, and local plaster. The rustic exterior is made from 150-year-old reclaimed timbers and siding sourced from a shed once owned by the Winchester Rifle Company in Massachusetts. Paired with eclectic accents from all over the world, this is one of those one-of-a-kind lodges that would be worth repeating.

For Families and Couples Alike

Wilderness Lodge sits in seclusion in a grove of aspens and firs and offering the ultimate in privacy and exclusivity. Don't need the whole house? There are four fully furnished suites for couples to rent individually: Kachina, Wheeler, Williams, and Latir.  Or if it's a family affair, the house can also be rented as a whole, for a grand total of four private bedrooms (two with balconies), five bathrooms, and a giant bunk room for kids complete with two bunks and a king bed). There is a steam room on the lower level as well as full mudrooms for ease of entry after a long day playing outdoors on both the upper and lower levels.

Deep and Steep

Just as the name suggests, Taos Ski Valley boasts incredible skiing and other winter adventures. It is a revered escape among passionate skiers worldwide and satisfies these enthusiasts with steep, vertical thrills, exciting bowls and chutes, and a top rated ski school. With a base elevation of 9,200 feet and a summit elevation of 12,481 feet, Taos Ski Valley excites with a vertical drop of over 3,000 feet. Pair this with an annual snowfall of over 300 inches and it’s not hard to see why Taos is often referred to as “Deep and Steep.”

Apres Ski Activities

While the majority of the excitement at Taos is contained to the mountain in the winter months, there are adventures to be found in other areas as well. Snow tubing, fantastic snowshoe trails, groomed Nordic ski trails, and snowmobile tours can all be found in the valley. Taos proper is a city full of culture, art and history. Be sure to visit Taos Pueblo, multi-storied adobe buildings that have been continuously inhabited for over 1000 years and  are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy world-class dining and incredible shopping in this Southwestern gem. No matter what you plan on doing while staying at Wilderness Lodge, this is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant history of the Enchanted Circle.
