Discover Kenya on Two Wheels
By taking your safari to the next level at Borana
Most Outside GO safaris feature plush methods of transportation—think Land Rovers, private prop planes, and sometimes the odd camel or horse. But when you book a stay at Borana in Kenya, you can expect a whole different pace on two wheels. Known for its horseback journeys, Borana is also one of the few outfitters able to supply guests with cushy mountain bikes capable of tackling every inch of the local terrain—and the guides with the know-how to make the experience a phenomenal one. This family-friendly camp in Kenya is the go-to destination for active travelers looking for a one-of-a-kind experience in East Africa.
High Above Sea Level
Owned and operated by the Dyer family for three generations, Borana ranch sits 17 miles north of the equator at 6,000 feet above sea level. The property is located within the vast area of the Ewaso ecosystem of Kenya's Laikipia Plateau. The snow-tipped peaks of Mount Kenya are visible to the south, while an expansive desert can be seen to the north. Here in Kenya, nights are cool and there is no risk of malaria. It’s an area where the wildlife thrives and guests with a penchant for the active lifestyle rejoice.
If you think sneaking up on African game in a 4WD vehicle is cool, wait until you try it by bike. The animals seem big from a Land Rover, but from this vantage point they're truly majestic. At Borana, you’ll follow your guide through the sweeping terrain, scoping out giraffes, elephants, lions, and more, all from atop your mountain bike. A support vehicle follows you in case of flats and to carry things like snacks and cameras to make your ride as comfortable as an afternoon pedal through the park. The endorphin rush you’ll earn, mixed with adrenalin from flowing down a steep plateau back to the lodge, will make this one of your favorite ways to experience Africa.
Borana Lodge itself is composed of eight separate cottages, each with an open fireplace and private veranda. The cottages are designed to maintain both an air of luxury and the soul-enriching isolation that makes Borana so special. The buildings are constructed using local and sustainable materials, from the spacious bathrooms to the magnificent wooden accents. (Borana also has it’s own conservancy dedicated to protecting critical habitat and wildlife.) An infinity pool sits strategically on the property to provide excellent views of the watering hole down below, where elephants meander along their well-trodden path to refresh themselves. A spa and communal dining area complete the camp to ensure every need is met.
Your day might begin with a morning yoga class, an afterwards a tour of the property’s working cattle ranch and an afternoon dip in the infinity pool, winding down with a horseback ride to soak up a classic Kenyan sunset. Or perhaps you’d like to zip around in motorized quad bikes and jump off a butte with a parasail, finishing your day with a swim beneath a remote waterfall. You might find the options to explore at Borana so overwhelming you'll want to extend your stay, and that's quite all right. And as a family-owned institution, Borana embraces children of all ages with open arms and a plethora of activities to keep them busy, engaged, and having fun.
Kenya is yours to explore as you make yourself at home on this privately owned slice of African paradise. Get in touch below to start planning your adrenaline-filled Kenyan experience.
